From River to Sea . Marine Heritage of Sam Saunders
Published; Cross Print
First Edition 1993
In the first book, ‘From Sea to Air’ on the history of the Company best known as Saunders Roe Limited the authors found so much very interesting material that they found it necessary to give prominence to the aviation story and decided that the details of the marine history should forma separate volume. The present volume ‘From River to Sea’ benefits from a great deal of further research into the history of the Company from its origins in 1830 to the present day. The central character remains Samuel (Sam) Saunders who first developed his boat building skills on the River Thames in the second half of the nineteenth century. He was clearly a man of great character and charm in addition to his ability as an inventor, designer and manager. `From River to Sea’ traces the story of early boating days on the River Thames, the move to Cowes on the accession of Edward VII in 1901 and the rapid expansion which followed. The story continues with the acquisition of the Company by the famous aviator Alliott Verdon Roe and his partners who renamed the Company Saunders Roe Limited; and the take over by Westland Aircraft Limited in the late 1950’s.
Throughout the history of this Company, which continues to thrive from the same base in East Cowes set up by Sam Saunders in 1901, its engineers have designed and manufactured a rich variety of marine vessels. These have varied from beautiful steam powered Thames launches through world water speed record breakers to hydrofoils and the worlds first, and a few years later, the largest hovercraft.
The author is to be congratulated on the rich combination of Company, local history, engineering and social history contained in ‘From River to Sea’.
