‘Shanklin Chine — Its History, Environment and Culture 1817-2017’ celebrates the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Chine, one of the earliest tourist attractions in the UK. Shanklin Chine, the Island’s largest Chine, was first opened by William Colenutt in 1817 when he cut a path and steps from Fisherman’s Cottage, past a series of waterfalls, to connect with the Old Village. The Chine has retained its natural character and is a haven for an extraordinary range of wildlife species. During the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Chine attracted a remarkable number of artists, writers, poets and other famous visitors who were drawn to its dramatic scenery. Their interest in the Chine’s geology, natural environment and history continues to this day. In the twentieth century the Chine played a vital role during World War II when it was used as a training ground by 40 Royal Marine Commando in preparation for the Dieppe Raid. The Chine also fulfilled an important role as the route for PLUTO (Pipeline Under the Ocean), which supplied fuel to the Normandy beaches; a section of the pipe still exists in the Chine today. This extensively illustrated description of Shanklin Chine records its 200th anniversary and introduces a new era as a charitable trust continuing the work of Mrs Anne Springman into the future and ensuring its long-term preservation for public enjoyment.
