FIRST EDITION 1972
The history of 27 Squadron over the 57 years of its existence, was virtually a history of the Royal Air Force. Starting life as a fighter unit, 27 later flew in practically every major role open to a Service squadron. It has acted as bomber, reconnaissance, army cooperation, night fighter, day and night interdiction, mercy rescue, transport, paratroop vehicle, conventional jet bomber and missile delivery system. Since its early dogfights over the Somme, its aircraft have operated among the baking mountains of India’s North—West Frontier; during the disastrous Malayan campaign of 1941/42; over the steaming jungle of Burma; down the perilous air corridors to Berlin; across the arid desert wastes of Suez and Egypt; until its final tour of duty at an anonymous Strike Command dispersal aerodrome, with the devastating combination of its Vulcan/Blue Steel duo. The author, who served for 26 years in the RAF, describes all these many facets of 27 Squadron’s long and illustrious story in comprehensive detail. In addition to being the story of the Squadron’s aircraft, it is also a record of the many men, both famous and hitherto anonymous, whose skill, courage and perseverance created and maintained the squadron’s great traditions. Detailed appendices, listing the Squadron’s commanders, bases, all known individual aircraft, unit markings, squadron songs etc, are backed by a fascinating selection of photographs, many of them published for the first time. Foreword by Air Marshal Sir Andrew McKee KCB, CBE, DSO, DFC, AFC.
