Since 1861 the famous Red Funnel Group has continuously served the Isle of Wight and surrounding hinterland through the provision of its vital cross-Solent ferries from Southampton (with its excellent motorway, road and rail links), holiday booking services, freight distribution and transport operations. In years gone by Red Funnel’s well known paddle steamers provided the ferry and excursion services. They in turn were succeeded by charismatic motor ships carrying passengers, cars and the Royal Mail, leading to today’s fleet comprising vessels that are amongst the largest and most comfortable roll-on, roll-off ferries serving the Isle of Wight round the clock, seven days a week and large 35-knot catamarans speeding to and from the Island in under 25 minutes.
Red Funnel 150 includes the whole history of this important shipping and transport group from the earliest times through 150 years of war and peace, good times and bad – right up to today’s services that are so much a part of life on the Isle of Wight and the adjacent South Coast.
