It is hoped that this book will provide a fresh and readable account of many of the most interesting aspects of the Isle of Wight. Apart from descriptions of the Scenery and Natural History special emphasis has been placed on the story of how the Island developed from a quiet backwater into a thriving holiday resort area.
The numerous colour and black and white illustrations are an essential element of the book as they vividly depict the scenery and way of life of Island residents a century or so ago.
In view of the wealth of artistic talent that visited the Island in the 18th and 19th centuries there can surely be no more appropriate way of illustrating such a book.
Robin McInnes is an Engineer and Geologist who has lived and worked on the Isle of Wight for 35 years. He is a keen local historian with a special interest in Isle of Wight Art. Apart from writing Guidebooks to the Island for such publishers as Collins, Frederick Warne and Pallant Press he has also contributed articles on local topics to Country Life, The Antiques Collector and other literary and scientific journals.
Over the past seven years he has organised five major exhibitions of local history based on Shanklin and The Undercliff and has given numerous illustrated talks with Andy Butler who has contributed three chapters to this book. Their recent joint publications `The Undercliff’ and ‘Shanklin in Old Picture Postcards’ received high acclaim, whilst their exhibition ‘Historic Undercliff’ held at St Lawrence in 1984 was acquired by the Ventnor and District Local History Society and formed a major part of the Inaugural Exhibition at the new Heritage Centre. Andy Butler is a professional lobster fisherman. His intimate knowledge of coastal waters, natural history and local history has enabled him to make a major contribution to this book. In addition he has carried out much of the original photographic work.
