The Allied struggle against the Axis Powers in  North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean in  1940-43 was crucial, not only to the outcome of  the Middle East war but as the basis for  ultimate defeat of Hitler’s and Mussolini’s  totalitarian empires. In this book, following the  main theme of his successful Bomber Barons  and Fighter Pilots of the RAF 1939-45, Chaz  Bowyer highlights the courage, prowess and  sacrifices of a select and largely little known  handful of individual men, and particular facets  of that campaign, to exemplify the diverse  nationalities and characters of the men of the  so-termed ‘Desert Air Force’.  From a weak, ill-equipped force in 1940, the  DAF grew to dominate the Mediterranean  skies by 1943, and in the process laid the  foundations of victory.
